Over in China at the end of August, Halloween-type traditions can be seen in the Hungry Ghost Festival, where people also honour and remember their deceased ancestors.

 

People make offerings of food and incense, and it's believed that the spirits return to visit the living during this time. Isn't it fascinating how this idea of ghosts coming back to the world of the living can be found in cultures all around the world!

 

One interesting Halloween custom that's gaining popularity worldwide is pumpkin carving. Originally from that Irish tradition, the carving of pumpkins into what we call ‘jack-o'-lanterns' has become a central part of Halloween in lots of countries.

 

Families get together to create spooky and creative designs on pumpkins, which are then lit with candles inside to create a really eerie effect.

 

Now, on that note, let me finish with another joke… Why was the pumpkin afraid to cross the road on Halloween? Because it was scared of getting squashed! Get it? Okay, let me explain… Pumpkin is a type of vegetable known as a ‘squash'. I know, not great… but I do my best!
