Can comedy be translated? -1
 
When was the last time you had a good laugh? I don't just mean a polite chuckle… No, I'm thinking more of a proper belly laugh, the kind where you hear or see something that's so funny you end up almost crying with laughter.
 
Now, try to remember what it was that made you laugh. Was it something someone said to you? Or something you saw out in the street, or maybe on TV? Perhaps it was a ‘stand-up' comedian, you know, the kind of comedian who stands on stage telling jokes.
 
Humour is a strange and interesting subject, isn't it. It's pretty much universal, in the sense that we all laugh. Of course, the things we laugh at and find funny might be different, but one thing we have in common is that we all have a ‘sense of humour', or the ability to find things funny.
 
But can comedy or humour really translate between different countries or cultures? Now, that's an interesting question… And it's not as simple as it might seem. Having lived in a few countries around the world I'd say that, in my experience, it's not at all certain that people in one culture will find another culture's sense of humour funny.

언제 마지막으로 좋은 웃음을 지었나요? 예의 바른 웃음이 아니라, 솔직한 배를 움켜잡을 정도의 웃음을 말하는 거예요. 그런 유머를 듣거나 보게 되면 웃음으로 눈물이 날 정도로 웃게 되는 그런 상황 말이죠.
 
자, 그런 웃음을 자아낸 원인을 떠올려 보세요. 누군가가 당신에게 한 말이었나요? 아니면 길거리에서 본 어떤 것이나, 아니면 TV에서 본 것이었나요? 아마도 '스탠드업' 코미디언일 수도 있겠죠. 무대에서 무슨 농담을 하는 그런 코미디언 말이에요.
 
유머는 이상하고 흥미로운 주제죠, 맞지요? 우리 모두가 웃는다는 점에서는 거의 보편적입니다. 물론, 우리가 웃고 웃기는 대상은 다를 수 있겠지만, 공통적으로 '유머 감각'이라든지 웃기는 걸 찾아내는 능력은 우리 모두가 가지고 있는 것 중 하나입니다.
 
하지만 코미디나 유머는 정말로 다른 나라나 문화 사이에서 번역될 수 있을까요? 이건 흥미로운 질문이에요... 그리 간단한 문제는 아닙니다. 전 세계 여러 나라에서 살아본 경험상 한 문화에 속한 사람들이 다른 문화의 유머 감각을 재미있다고 생각할지는 전혀 확실하지 않습니다.
