The antibiotic threat -4

 

Imagine taking antibiotics when you have a viral infection like the common cold; it doesn't help, because a virus is not a bacterial infection.

 

Furthermore, antibiotics are used in agriculture to prevent disease amongst animals in crowded conditions. They're often just mixed into the animals' food. This practice can also contribute to the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

 

So, how could this affect humanity and what can be done about it? Well, if we don't fix this soon, simple infections that are currently treatable may become life-threatening once again.

 

Surgery, cancer treatments, childbirth, all of which rely on antibiotics to prevent infections, could become far riskier procedures. That sounds scary, doesn't it!

 

 

But there are actions we can take to fix this. Education plays a vital role, and that's why we're discussing it here. The more we understand the importance of responsible antibiotic use, the less likely we are to demand antibiotics when they're not necessary.
