The antibiotic threat -5

 

Doctors, too, can make a difference by prescribing antibiotics only when they're certain they'll be effective. And in agriculture, stricter regulations and guidelines can be imposed to limit the unnecessary use of antibiotics in animals.

 

The World Health Organisation is taking this very seriously, and began work in 2015 on a coordinated global plan to solve the problem. But it turns out that help might come in an unexpected form…

 

A report on the BBC in May this year told how scientists in Canada and the US have used AI, or artificial intelligence, to test thousands of combinations of chemical compounds on bacterial infections to find new antibiotic drugs that work. And apparently, the AI discovered nine new antibiotics in just an hour and a half!

 

Amazing! Obviously, any new drugs will need to go through clinical trials before they can become widely available for us to use. But this new AI-based research is hugely promising, a real ‘game-changer'. AI to the rescue!

 

Now, my question to you this week is, what other major problems do you see facing society in the near future? Write and tell me your thoughts, and maybe I can try to do a future podcast episode about those too.
